All candidates receive an Award, which shows their result on each test component as a number of shields out of a possible maximum of five. A result of one shield means they can improve a lot in that skill, while 5 shields mean that the learner did very well in that skill and answered most questions correctly. With a total of 10 or 11 shields and above, the learner should be ready to start preparing for the next Cambridge exam.

Awards can normally be dispatched to a Centre within two weeks of the completed papers being received at Cambridge ESOL.

For the Reading & Writing test, candidates only need a pen or pencil. Nothing is needed for the Speaking test. For the Listening test, candidates must remember to take colored pencils or pens (red, blue, green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, black, brown and grey) as well as an ordinary pen or pencil.

Speaking tests are marked immediately by the Oral Examiner, and the marks sent to Cambridge ESOL with the completed Listening and Reading & Writing papers. These papers are marked by a team of trained clerical markers, working to detailed mark schemes. All papers are double-marked.

In most parts of the test, spelling has to be 100% correct, while in Part 2 of Movers and Flyers in the Listening test a limited number of inaccurate spellings are accepted. In Part 2 of Starters in the Listening test, if the spelling of a word is being tested in the Listening paper, it will be spelt out.

Thirteen-year-olds can take the tests, because they are often in the same class as twelve-year-old candidates. If candidates younger or older than this wish to enter for one of the YLE tests, Jubilee ESOL center admin will contact University of Cambridge ESOL. The tests are designed to appeal to children in the 7-12 age group, and may not be suitable in content or appearance for candidates outside this age range. We encourage candidates over the age of 13 to consider taking KET.

Yes. The tests are frequently taken by children who are colour-blind or have other visual or hearing problems, and have been taken by candidates with learning difficulties. However, owing to the visual nature of the YLE tests, Braille test versions are not currently available. Please note that any special needs provision required must be specified when the Local Secretary books a test date - at least six weeks in advance - as in some cases adapted papers have to be produced.
